The Environmental Management Association of Hong Kong Limited

A registered charity under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance of Hong Kong

“Found in Repair” Electronic Appliance Repairing Online Workshop

Hong Kong generated around 70,000 tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment annually with approximately 21.7 kg per capita, which is the highest amount found in Asia. E-waste contains toxic substances that could be a hazard to human beings and the environment if not properly treated or disposed of.

Some European and western countries are taking various strategies to reduce disposal amounts by adopting financial incentives and legislative instruments, such as tax deduction for repairing electronic appliances. In Hong Kong, the Producer Responsibility Scheme on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WPRS) has been fully implemented and eight types of Regulated Electrical Equipment (REE) will be sent to the WEEE·Park for recycling. However, recycling is not the only answer to the e-waste crisis. There are alternatives to throwing away items or recycling — we can repair.

The “Found in Repair” team is formed by two students from HKU MSc in Environmental Management. They will introduce the problem of e-waste disposal and various policies in foreign countries and in Hong Kong. They also invite retired repair specialists to share routine maintenance tips of electronic appliances and demonstrate basic repairing skills in the workshop.
