In October 2021, the Government of the HKSAR updated its climate strategy with ‘Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050’ with the vision of “Zero-carbon Emissions‧Liveable City‧Sustainable Development”. This plan also outlined the strategies and targets for combating climate change and achieving carbon neutrality, namely net-zero electricity generation, energy saving and green buildings, green transport and waste reduction.

In fact, about three-quarters of Hong Kong is countryside and is covered by open grassland to woodland, which can take up and store large amounts of carbon thus slowing down climate change. In this seminar, Dr. Billy Hau will discuss the potential of forest carbon in combating climate change and supporting the ‘Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050’ initiatives towards carbon-neutral communities.

Dr. Hau is Principal Lecturer and Programme Director of MSc in Environmental Management, School of Biological Sciences, HKU.
